Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of sound in one or both ears or in the head when no external sound is present. It is often referred to as “ringing in the ears,” although some people hear hissing, roaring, whistling, chirping, or clicking. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant-with single or multiple tones-and its perceived volume can range from subtle to shattering.
The ATA estimates that over 50 million Americans experience tinnitus to some degree. Of these, about 12 million have severe enough tinnitus to seek medical attention. And about two million patients are so seriously debilitated that they cannot function on a “normal,” day-to-day basis.
Take a look at the video below for example of what it might be like to live with Tinnitus.

An ADT alarm went off at my work and I was exposed for at least 5 full mintues until the alarm was turned off. It’s been a week and my ears are still ringing. I’m afraid the super loud decibels (140) has caused permanently damage to my ears. I am scared this ringing won’t ever go away. When I called the company, a lady said give it 24 to 48 hours and it should go away. It hasn’t…..
Amy, that’s really scary that an alarm was 140 decibels! While it’s important that everyone hear an alarm it’s unnecessary to broadcast the sound so loudly. I hope the ringing in your ears stops soon.
